If you have a printer at home that uses ink cartridges or toner, you may feel like you are using way too much ink and are changing cartridges constantly. If this is the case, it will help to follow these easy tips.

Use Draft Quality

One of the first things you should do is set your printer to default to draft mode. This will ensure that every print job that goes through your printer uses the least amount of ink, by default. While this is typically not the print mode that you want to use when printing photos or a high-quality print for a presentation, it will be perfect for your daily printing needs for everyone in your household.

If you are using a Windows computer, for example, you will want to navigate to your printer preference panel and find the printer that you are using. There should be a printing preferences tab that allows you to select the print quality for that specific printer. Change the quality draft or fast draft quality. Remember that you must change these settings on every computer in your home to make sure that everyone prints in draft quality.

Use Remanufactured Cartridge

Know that you do not need to buy a brand-new printer cartridge every time you need new ink for your printer. It is possible to buy remanufactured toner cartridges, which is when the printer cartridges are reused to recycle the materials. Not only does this keep the toner cartridges out of landfills, but gives you some savings on your printer toner cartridge

Use Third-Party Cartridges

It is also worth checking whether your printer allows you to use third-party toner cartridges. Some more modern printers do require that you only use a toner that is made by the manufacturer, but this is typically found in cheaper printers that have a lower upfront cost so that you can afford the equipment.

Preserve Ink Cartridges That Are Open

If you have an ink cartridge that has been opened, but you know that you won't be using the ink cartridge anytime soon, know that the cartridge is going to dry up if you just leave it in the printer. You can actually conserve the ink in these cartridges by preserving them in a specific way.

Place the ink cartridges in a plastic tub that can form a tight seal, and then place them upside-down in the container. Then place a damp cloth or piece of paper in the tub, and seal it up. Make sure that nothing is touching the top of the ink cartridge, and you'll find that the ink will not dry out when you are ready to print again.
